Olympic Runner
Can a man with two amputated legs have an advantage on other
runners? Only these runners aren't just average Joes. They're
Olympic athletes. One man is striving to do just that. Oscar
Pistorius, of South Africa, is attempting to become the first
man with prosthetic legs to compete at the world's highest competition.
However, the Track and Field Committee of the Olympics is showing
resistance towards Pistorius.
So, the question becomes, can prosthetics give someone an advantage,
or disadvantage? Sci-Tech's Coach Linda Garcia thinks that his
legs are enough of a handicap, and if he can run with them then
he should be allowed to compete.
"Other Olympians need to compete against Pistorius without
excuses," Garcia said.
The members of the Track and Field Committee are faced with
a tough and difficult decision regarding Pistorius.
An obstacle is nothing new for Pistorius, as he has worked vigorously
to overcome them in his past and present. Pistorius's efforts
offer some encouragement to Garcia.
"Anyone who can overcome an obstacle can be used as an
example on all areas of life."
Pistorius can possibly offer a ratings boost to the Olympics
if he is allowed to compete. Garcia already said she would definitely
be watching him if he makes it.
Whether Pistorius's efforts fall short, or whether they are
rewarded, they will certainly be appreciated.
Presidential Candidate Updates
The Democratic primaries are becoming more important to both
candidates, while the Republican candidate, John McCain, is
already building his run for the White House.
The Democrats, Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama, have basically
split. Clinton took California and Massachusetts, but Obama
had more states overall. Barack Obama has 1,359 delegates (unofficial),
so far, and Hilary Clinton has 1,276 (unofficial). Either candidate
needs 2,025 to win.
The Republicans did show a few surprises. McCain can be seen
as the clear leader. Mitt Romney had a disappointing race. He
has since dropped out of the race. Although Huckabee had a surprisingly
good Super Tuesday, he could not catch McCain and has since
dropped out of the race. Ron Paul did come in third for a few
states, but didn't really make a dent as far as getting voters.
